Laboratory Qualitative Filter Paper:Making a Choice Based On Filter Paper Grade
Date: 2017-05-12

Qualitative Filter Paper Grade
In crucial research areas that impact ever advancing scientific industries, it is vital to be equipped with the right lab tools, like to choose the right filter paper. Filter papers are critical filtration products, and are used under various conditions for specific samples depending on the type of filter paper grade. These filter paper grades define the design, structure, function and application of various filter papers for specific purposes and samples.

Making a Choice Based On Filter Paper Grade
Your choice of filter paper is made quite simple by considering three factors – the sample, your requirement and the filter paper grade. If you want to test liquids, separate precipitates, monitor pollution based on atmospheric dust, or if you wish to detect gas, you could opt for lower grades of filter paper.
Higher filter paper grades of filter paper would come into the picture when you are aiming for higher particle retention, dealing with gelatinous precipitates, sample preparation, determining acidic spectra, HPLC and similar requirements. These papers have higher loading capacities and can also handle samples that are generally hard to filter, and that require greater precision in separating particles.

Starlab Qualitative Filter Paper
Grade 1: A widely used standard grade filter paper for routine applications with medium retention and flow rate. It covers a wide range of laboratory applications and is frequently used for clarifying liquids.
Grade 2: Slightly more retentive than BIO-1 with a corresponding increase in filtration time
Grade 3: Double the thickness of Grade 1 with still finer particle retention and excellent loading capacity, the extra thickness gives increased wet strength and makes this grade highly suitable for use in Büchner funnels.
Grade 4:Extremely fast filtering with excellent retention of coarse particles and gelatinous precipitates such as ferric hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. Very useful as a rapid filter for routine clean-up of biological fluids or organic extracts during analysis.
Grade 5:The maximum degree of fine particle filtration in the qualitative range. Capable of retaining the fine precipitates encountered in chemical analysis. Slow flow rate.
The filter paper grade that you choose can tell you at a glance as to which lab research or study a specific filter paper should be used for. It also helps in goal planning for your research, as grades define usage of these papers in specific applications and you can plan your tests systematically.

The Importance of Choosing Based On Grades
